No, My Student, I Expect You To Learn

The students in Mr. Money's Pre-AP English class began their book study on the young adult spy novel Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. Students are exploring the language of the book to see how the author uses word choice in building description and setting the tone of the plot. They are also examining how a sentence, paragraph, and chapter contribute to the overall structure of the plot. When answering comprehension and evaluation questions students must cite evidence from the text to support their answer. The students are also comparing it to selected extracts from Ian Fleming’s novel Dr. No to analyze how a writer crafts language to influence the reader. Along the way students will design a teen spy gadget and plan a villain’s lair to use imagery in descriptive writing. The novel study will conclude with a plot map, creating chapter sketches based on main idea, and a comprehension test.
